What Are Backlit Channel Letters?
Backlit channel letters, also known as halo lit letters or reverse channel letters, are illuminated signs with LED modules installed inside each letter. The light is directed toward the mounting surface and reflected back to create a soft halo glow effect around the letters, giving a floating, clean appearance.
Backlit letters are widely used for storefront signage, office branding, and architectural applications due to their excellent visibility, energy efficiency, and elegant lighting effect.
- Commercial use: retail stores, restaurants, hotels, salons, clinics, and offices
- Public spaces: schools, hospitals, museums, and churches
- Indoor: reception areas, lobbies, and feature walls
- Outdoor: storefronts, building facades, and signage systems
Backlit Channel Letters Models
Based on different materials and fabrication methods, our backlit letters are divided into three main models:

Luxury backlit metal letters are fabricated as 3D stainless steel letters with LED lighting installed inside. Various finishes are available for the metal letter bodies, including painted, powder-coated, mirror polished, brushed, plated, and wood grain finishes.
The acrylic panel is partially embedded within the metal letter body, with a portion left visible and light-transmitting. Light passing through this visible acrylic is directed toward the mounting surface to create a halo effect, while part of the light is directly visible to the eye, resulting in higher brightness and a stronger, more premium halo lighting effect.
These letters can be mounted directly on the wall or installed with a gap from the wall. Thanks to their easy installation, high brightness, and strong halo effect, this is the most widely used type of backlit metal letters.

Classic backlit metal letters feature the same stainless steel letter construction and internal LED lighting as the luxury model. The metal letter bodies are also available in painted, powder-coated, mirror polished, brushed, plated, and wood grain finishes.
In this model, the acrylic back panel is fully enclosed inside the metal letter body and is not visible from the sides. The acrylic panel serves as a diffuser, allowing the light to pass through and illuminate the mounting surface, creating a softer and more uniform halo effect.
These letters must be installed with a gap from the wall to achieve the proper lighting effect. This model offers a good balance between cost and visual performance and is the most traditional type of backlit metal letters.

Backlit acrylic letters are made from CNC-engraved opal acrylic with LED lighting installed inside. The side walls facing the mounting surface remain translucent, allowing light to pass through and illuminate the mounting surface to form a halo effect, while part of the light is directly visible to the eye.
The front face and front-side edges are coated or painted to block light. An aluminum backing plate is typically used to seal the rear of the letters and provide proper heat dissipation for the LEDs.
This model offers high brightness and a strong halo effect, and supports many design styles and 3D effects. For letters with thin strokes, the letter body can be designed with a trapezoidal cross-section, allowing a slim front appearance while keeping enough internal space near the mounting surface for LED installation.
As a relatively newer type of backlit letters, it is especially suitable for indoor and close-range applications.
Installation of Backlit Channel Letters
Backlit letters are typically installed using stud mounting. Holes are drilled into the wall to secure the letters, and the wiring from each individual letter is connected in parallel to the output of a transformer. The transformer is then connected to the AC power supply.
Professional installation is recommended to ensure safety, proper alignment, and good lighting performance. Do not connect the letters directly to AC power, because LED systems typically run on 12V DC. A direct AC connection can damage the LEDs and create a safety hazard.
Maintenance
Backlit letters require minimal maintenance. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth and clean water is sufficient.
To maintain the surface finish and extend the lifespan of the letters, avoid using alcohol-based or harsh chemical cleaners, especially on painted or plated surfaces.
The LED lighting used in backlit letters typically has a long service life. Brightness may gradually fade over time, which is normal for LEDs, but high-quality LED systems last for many years. In most cases, replacement isn’t needed unless you want a higher brightness level.
